"Ethnographie Ancienne de l´Equateur" (1912) by René Verneau and Paul Rivet is to Ecuadorian archaeology what Alexis de Tocqueville´s "Democracy in America" is to United States political science.
Amazingly, "Ethnographie" was never translated into Spanish. Until now. Dr. Benigno Malo Vega, author of "El Tesoro Precolombino de Sígsig" and member of our Patecte search team, produced the publication of "Etnografía antigua del Ecuador." It was years in the making. The translation by archaeologist Catherine Lara is superb. (NOTE: I lived in France for 17 years so my conclusion is not totally without foundation). Translations are tricky, strange. For me, Ernest Hemingway´s "The Old Man and The Sea" reads better in French than in English. On the other hand, Albert Camus´ "The Rebel" ("L´Homme revolté") reads better in English than in French. I will go ahead and say it: fluid, never opaque, the Lara translation reads like a novel. Chapeau! Chapeau!

1. Do you have a photograph of Heduvides Serrano? Yes. Our documentary will show it publicly for the first time. Be sure to be sitting down when you see it; your mind is going to wobble. You will imagine many things in your life, but never the real Heduvides. Beware of imitations. I have seen fakes on the Internet. All I can say is, somebody has an interesting sense of humor. 2. I wrote that a similar image of the Patecte´s serpent-feline-bird figure exists on the Door of The Sun in Tiahuanaco. In the Patecte, the Tiahuanaco figure was rotated clockwise 90 degrees. That rotation was shown in the first image of the Patecte ever published, by Federico González Suárez in 1878. Question: could the Patecte´s orientation simply be the publisher´s error? Answer: No. The González Suárez image was made from the painting commissioned by Heduvides Serrano. Suárez never saw the actual Patecte. So, the question becomes: is the orientation of the Patecte in the painting the same as that shown by Suárez? The answer: yes, the orientation is the same. What we do not know: did Heduvides and the painter misunderstand the orientation of the Patecte. If we find the Patecte perhaps we can resolve the mystery. 3. Father Julio-Maria Matovelle published (“Cuenca de Tomebamba”) what has become the iconic image of the Patecte. That image is a lithograph created by a Cuenca artist, Abraham Sarmiento. Matovelle wrote that he was working from the Heduvides painting, as did Suárez. Question: “Is the Matovelle-Sarmiento lithograph an accurate reproduction of the painting?” Answer: our documentary will put the two artworks side by side in order that you can judge for yourself. What I can tell you is that the lithograph is not an exact copy. But, is the Heduvides painting an accurate reproduction of the Patecte? Answer: who knows? We must find the Patecte to answer that question. Our regular readers know the painting vanished after Matovelle´s publication in 1921. It took us seven years, but we tracked down the artwork. As with the photo of Heduvides, our documentary will show the painting publicly for the first time. There is something the Patecte, the painting and the lithograph have in common. All three disappeared. We are working with the archivist of the Oblatos, the religious order founded by Matovelle, to find the lithograph. Images: (1) The Door of The Sun, Tiahuanaco. (2) Engraving on The Door of The Sun. (3) Matovelle´s iconic image of the Patecte. TRADUCCIÓN AL ESPAÑOL EL PATECTE: TRES PREGUNTAS QUE ME HACEN CON FRECUENCIA 1. “¿Tienes una fotografía de Heduvides Serrano?” Si.
