Our documentary film project, “The Search for The Lost Gold Patecte of Ecuador,” has a daunting assignment.
One of Latin American´s foremost aesthetics scholars: “The entire world knows that different indigenous peoples have narratives (myths, legends, stories) of great qualitative and quantitative richness. But those ´manifestations´ have yet to enter any official history of literature. They have been ´rescued´ and ´valued´ by anthropologists and folklorists; they remain anthropological and folklorist material. They are not literature. They are put together in foreign languages and are transmitted orally. They belong to ´another world.´ They are not art. For that reason, they do not appear in any history of literature; they are not included in any educational program. No literary critic studies them.” Alfonso Carrasco Vintimilla, "El único puente posible: Obra crítica," Universidad de Cuenca, Cuenca, Ecuador, 2008, pp. 429-30. [My translation] "Another world." The Western world views all things Pre-Columbian as exotic, hence marginal -- irrelevant to understanding current events and people. Our documentary will directly challenge that viewpoint: Something is great art more because of the questions it raises than the answers it gives. The Mona Lisa remains THE textbook example. A (i) serpent (ii) exiting the (iii) mouth of a (iv) hybrid bird/lion/man. If you dreamed that dream, what would it mean? Clearly, powerful subterranean forces are at work. The Patecte welled up from the realm of archetypes, i.e., universal, archaic patterns and images in the collective unconscious of mankind. They are inherited potentials – the psychic equivalent of instincts. The Patecte achieves what all masterpieces accomplish on the most fundamental, no-nonsense level: you never get tired of seeing it. That inexhaustible energy is generated by stirring the unconscious. You do not look at an artwork like the Patecte; you watch it. One day Pre-Columbian art will take its rightful place with ancient Greek and Roman, Islamic and Oriental art. Our documentary is dedicated to advancing that outcome. Pertenecen a ´otro mundo´.

The significance of the Patecte was summarized by a team of scholars in the Cañar province of Ecuador, home of the descendants of the creators of the Patecte -- the Cañari indigenous people:
“The cover of each of our Heritage Series books will be illustrated with the image of the Patecte which, by its symbolic elements and ideography, integrates the Cañari culture and world view that essentially underlie today, in a determining way, the definition of our collective identity.” Given the transnational origin and primordial nature of the Patecte´s iconography, does the Patecte represent not only the collective identity of Ecuador but of Latin America? Of mankind? Bird/lion/serpent: that combination of animals is known among scholars as The Andean Triad. In manifold forms such as the Patecte, it is found throughout the region. Books and dissertations have been written about the meaning of each of the three animals taken separately. Taken together, they form an archetype of incredible potency for doing what all great art does: stir the unconscious. ”Culture” can be defined as that which calls out things from the unconscious and puts names on them. In creating, maintaining and distributing the triad, Andean culture continues to do exactly that. Bird/lion/serpent is the Andes´ signature song, its gift to the world. Our post´s title comes from French poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1871), adolescent Shakespeare, hell raiser and model artist for countless artists such as Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison: “Qu'est-ce pour nous, mon coeur…” The Patecte; the Cañar Natives who created the Patecte and the Inca civil war that devastated them; the Cañaris´ support of the Spanish conquistadores, without which there would have been no Spanish conquest and plunder of South America; … So what? What does it matter to us? Answer: everything. * * * The last great economist John Maynard Keynes definitively answered Rimbaud´s ultimate question: “From the earliest times of which we have record-back, say, to two thousand years before Christ-down to the beginning of the eighteenth century, there was no very great change in the standard of life of the average man living in the civilised centres of the earth… The modern age opened; I think, with the accumulation of capital which began in the sixteenth century. I believe…that this was initially due to the rise of prices, and the profits to which that led, which resulted from the treasure of gold and silver which Spain brought from the New World into the Old… From the sixteenth century, with a cumulative crescendo after the eighteenth, the great age of science and technical inventions began, which since the beginning of the nineteenth century has been in full flood--coal, steam, electricity, petrol, steel, rubber, cotton, the chemical industries, automatic machinery and the methods of mass production, wireless, printing, Newton, Darwin, and Einstein, and thousands of other things and men too famous and familiar to catalogue. What is the result? In spite of an enormous growth in the population of the world… the average standard of life in Europe and the United States has been raised, I think, about fourfold.” John Maynard Keynes, “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren” (1930) Occidental readers: look around you. Without the Spanish conquest and the gold and silver it pillaged and sent to the Old World, most of what you are seeing right now wouldn´t be there – starting with the clothes you are wearing, the chair you are sitting in, and the computer on which you are reading these words. Almost everything would be different – and a lot poorer. It was not without cause that in what may have been his final poem, “Adieu,” Rimbaud simultaneously acknowledged/cursed/instigated/warned: “Il faut être absolument moderne.” One must be absolutely modern. * * * “Fourfold.” In one word, Keynes identified El Dorado in its fullest, truest sense – not a mystical city paved with gold hidden in a jungle but the daily world where we live and work. The fact we take entirely for granted the modern era and its four-fold improvement in our daily lives, makes no difference whatsoever. As El Dorado´s icon, its representative, its face, the lost gold Patecte of Ecuador is a lot more than a piece of metal. Another post noted longstanding rumors that the Patecte is in a German museum. Even more persistent rumors claim the Patecte is in a French museum. Not a bad guess... Father Julio-María Matovelle published a lithograph of the Patecte in his book “Cuenca de Tomebamba” (1921). Our prior post (“The Patecte You See Is Not What is There”) attached the book´s page showing the lithograph which has become the iconic image of the Patecte. Simultaneously, we showed something else… In the footnote on the page opposite the lithograph, Matovelle stated that Heduvides Serrano, the tomb raider who discovered the Patecte, sold it to an archaeological museum in Paris. Numerous Latin American historians will tell you the Patecte is in the Musée de l´Homme in Paris. Their assertion is highly reasonable, given Matovelle´s footnote. There is a special reason, however, why the Musée de l´Homme is even more reasonable prospect... That museum was founded by Paul Rivet, pioneer scholar in Ecuadorian archaeology. He spent 5 years working in Latin America. Sidebar: We discussed in a prior post how his classic work, “Etnographie Ancienne de l´Équateur” (1921-22), has only just now been translated into Spanish (“Etnografía Antigua del Ecuador”). Benigno Malo, a member of our Patecte search team, created and directed the translation project. I contacted the Musée de l´Homme in 2016. I will give you in a moment their response. Oursearch team will visit museums in France, Germany and England. Our documentary will present fascinating insights offered by European experts. No – the Patecte is not in the Musée de l´Homme. That leaves open three possibilities for a French connection: Musée du quai Branly, Musées à Versailles and the Musée d´Archéologie nationale. Our search team will visit all of them. We have noted before that the road to the Patecte is paved with double and triple-bottomed boxes. Was Heduvides telling the truth when he said he sold the Patecte to a museum in France? If one of them produces the Patecte, our search is over. However, if no museum in France or elsewhere in Europe has the Patecte… Possibility (1): Heduvides lied. He ordered the Patecte to be melted for its gold content. The Patecte is lost forever. Possibility (2): the Patecte was in the cache of gold Pre-Columbian relics Heduvides took to Peru. The story goes that he steamer transporting his treasure back to Ecuador sunk; the Patecte is at the bottom of the sea or was stolen by pirates. For more, see our previous post “The Patecte: An Astounding Family Story.” Possibility (3): Despite a negative response by European museums, Heduvides did indeed sell the Patecte to one of them. Here, a door opens to three more possibilities: (4) The European museum housing the Patecte is lying. It fears that Ecuador will demand the Patecte´s repatriation. We discussed this issue in another post. (5) The Patecte is in a museum which lost or mislaid it. This option will be explored with museum directors. (6) Both Heduvides and the museums are telling the truth. He sent the Patecte to one of them, but none has it now or in fact ever had it. How is that possible? Simply put, the Patecte was sent but never arrived at the museum which purchased it. A Chordeleg resident whose grandfather worked with Heduvides told me the ship transporting the Patecte to Europe sank in route. A second version was offered by a descendant of Heduvides´ brother, Ignacio. He told me the Patecte did indeed arrive in France. However, the year was 1871, when the Paris Commune temporarily seized control. In the chaos that reigned, the Patecte was stolen. He believes the Patecte is most likely in the hands of a descendant of the original private collector. If so, the Patecte could be languishing in a chest in an attic, unbeknownst to the descendant. All of which brings us to this key point about the Patecte odyssey: They say truth is stranger than fiction. Some things are stranger still. Image: National Archaeological Museum, Paris. Is the Patecte there? Our story:
A team goes in search of Pre-Columbian treasure -- the lost gold Patecte of Ecuador. The Patecte is more than a piece of metal. Its configuration of symbols could represent the collective identity of Latin America. Chordeleg, Ecuador, 1869. Treasure hunters discover a Pre-Columbian royal tomb. Its riches include a mysterious gold relief -- the Patecte. The Patecte soon vanished. Stolen? Hoarded? Melted down for its gold content? Mislaid in a museum? Lost at sea? The only hard proof the Patecte ever existed is an oil painting commissioned by the legendary tomb raider who discovered it, Heduvides Serrano. The rest of the story is paved with double and triple-bottomed boxes. An El Dorado fable? - or did the Patecte not only exist but exists today? The search team seeks answers on three continents. During the quest, historians, archaeologists and other experts decipher the Patecte´s hidden, timeless meaning. Perhaps, the mystery of the Patecte is easily solved. For decades the rumor has circulated in South American academic circles that the Patecte is in a German museum. No specific museum has never been identified. The Patecte in Deutschland? The idea is not as absurd as it initially sounds. The Ethnological Museum of Berlin is world-renowned for its collection of artifacts from the Inca Empire. That empire included what today is Ecuador. The museum´s Inca artifacts number over seventy thousand. Over forty-four thousand artifacts came from a single collector, Christian Theodor Wilhelm Gretzer. He acquired them between 1872 and 1904. Did Gretzer own the Patecte? The time period is right. Our search team will travel to Europe. We will collect insights about the Patecte from Latin American specialists in Germany´s major museums. Pictured here is a Pre-Columbian gold crown from the Chordeleg area in the Museum of Five Continents in Munich, Germany. The Myth of The Great American Novel persists despite the fact that novel was written: "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain.
Similarly, The Myth of El Dorado persists despite the fact El Dorado was discovered. Fantastic quantities of New World gold and silver came not from a hidden city but from tombs of Pre-Columbian Cañari Native royalty and priests in the Chordeleg area of Ecuador. Over the centuries, tons of precious metal relics were dug up and melted down. 550 kilos of gold were attributed to one legendary tomb raider alone – Heduvides Serrano, the man who discovered the Patecte. Only a minuscule number of Cañari relics escaped the melting pot. Despite the facts, The Myth of El Dorado persists because myths operate outside of, beyond, more than rationality. As in music, in myths we enter another sphere: the architecture of emotions. * * * The Patecte has a contender for being The Icon of El Dorado. Or does it? In 1533, Spanish conquistadores captured Atahualpa, the ruler of the Inca Empire. They demanded a ransom to free him. From all over the empire gold and silver relics poured in. Thanks to a trusty scribe, Pedro Sancho, we know not only how much treasure arrived but also who got what when the spoils were divvied up. I have attached an image of the first page of Sancho´s account -- altogether, four tons of gold and 8 tons of silver plus jewels. The Spaniards took no chances with their treasure hoard and killed Atahualpa anyway. Thus effectively ended the Inca Empire. Atahualpa had been headquartered in what is now Quito, Ecuador. He marched south and defeated his brother, Huáscar, in a civil war that raged 1529-1532. During his march, Atahualpa completely destroyed the city his father had built, Tomebamba, in what today is Cuenca, Ecuador. Tomebamba had been a center for Huáscar and his Cañari allies, the creators of the Patecte. Second only to Cuzco, the Inca capital, Tomebamba was the site of magnificent palaces and temples filled with gold and silver. Atahualpa looted them, which raises this question: Where did Tomebamba´s gold and silver come from originally? It is reasonable to suppose that the source of a sizable portion was the Chordeleg area. It had been under Inca control. Chordeleg -- land of the Patecte. You see now why I expressed doubt that the Atahualpa ransom was a contender for El Dorado Icon. If a significant portion of the ransom gold came from Chordeleg, to speak of the Patecte and the ransom is to speak of the same thing. I´ ll bet, dear reader, your mind right now is wobbling. 12 tons of gold and silver artifacts melted down, lost forever. Cultural genocide! If only we could see those relics for a few moments... In a way we can do exactly that -- enough to get a taste of what we are missing. Take a close look at the magical jewelry box of Pre-Columbian gold and silver relics shown here. They were flung into a crucible moments after this picture was taken. Not one exists today. |
