What is the best source for studying the Cañaris, the Pre-Columbian people who created the Patecte?
One work is so indispensable I cannot imagine working without it. “Los Cañaris en el incario y la conquista española del Tahuantinsuyo” by Gustavo Reinoso Hermida was published in 2017. A noted Ecuadorian historian, the author has spent a lifetime researching the Cañaris. I simply cannot say enough about this book, so I will not even try. The book has a Facebook page. If you have problems ordering “Los Cañaris,” which sometimes happens with Ecuadorian publications, I met the author last week. He is a very elegant, open man. I hope to see him again next month and will gladly ask him for suggestions.

Who is buried in Mozart´s tomb?
In what sport do they use a tennis ball? No, our inquiry is not one of those Groucho Marx “You Bet Your Life” consolation-prize questions. There are hundreds of colors of gold. Which one is the Patecte? As far as we know, nobody knows. The only thing anyone can say with certainty is only two people in modern history ever actually saw the Patecte: Heduvides Serrano, the legendary tomb raider who discovered the Patecte, and the artist whom Heduvides commissioned to make an oil painting of the Patecte. We noted in our post, “The Patecte You See is Not The Patecte That Is There,” that all known images of the Patecte were made from the Heduvides painting. For almost a century, the painting – exactly like the Patecte -- vanished. We tracked down the painting and will display it in our documentary for the first time to the general public, restored and in full color. There is of course no way of knowing until the Patecte is found if the gold color of the Patecte in the Heduvides painting is true, accurate. So, then, what is the basis for the particular gold color we selected for our image of the Patecte? Although we do not have the Patecte in front of us, there are gold relics from the Chordeleg area tombs in museums. Thanks to Internet color tools, we made an average of their colors to form the gold color you see here. If we find the Patecte, it will not be exactly the gold we are using. Equally true, our average will not be far off the real color. Images: gold relics from the Chordeleg-area tombs in museums which we used to form our Patecte gold color. (Hex#fdfa38. Red 253, green 250, blue 56). The pre-Columbian raft is an artistic construction exhibited at the Gold Museum in Bogota. It is estimated that the raft was made sometime between 600 and 1600 AD by lost-wax casting in gold with a small amount of copper. The construction represents the ceremony of El Dorado, the investiture of the Muisca chief, which took place at Lake Guatavita. The heir to the chieftainship covered his body with gold dust and jumped into the lake along with gold and emeralds offered to the gods. The largest figure represents the chief, who is adorned with a headdress, nose rings and earrings, measuring 10.2 cm. He is surrounded by oarsmen and soldiers who carry banners. The raft was found by three farmers in early 1969 in a cave in the village of Lázaro Fonte (Cundinamarca), Colombia. It was in a ceramic pot adorned with a human figure with sharp teeth. The priest of the municipality protected the piece until it was acquired by the Gold Museum. DESTINY WAYLAID: THE CASE OF LATIN AMERICA (Traducción al fondo)
Socrates: “[P]hilosophy begins in wonder.” -- Plato, Theaetetus 155c-d-- You parents out there know that children sometimes ask the best questions. Disturbing ones, too. “I wonder what would happen if.” If philosophy begins in wonder, wonder begins in childhood. Wonder is the philosopher´s stone -- the object of countless quests throughout history. The stone that is no stone. It is the natural endowment of youth who have yet to attend universities and been trained in pedantry. A child´s inquiry takes us straight to a new line of inquiry. Chances are you have never seen anything like it before – or since, because it will be quickly buried under the avalanche of Internet information which, in case you didn´t notice, is substituting itself for culture. * * * I wonder what would have happened if… Our inquiry begins with a man who may have unwittingly changed the history of the world. Unless your read our post “The Patecte Cat and The Source of El Dorado,” it is 99.99%-certain you never heard of him. The Patecte was created by Pre-Columbian Cañari Natives living in what today is Ecuador. Now, what would have happened if their scheming, maneuvering leader, Urco Colla, had not ignited the Inca civil war, 1526-32? Would that war have occurred anyway? Frankly, I don´t know. Do you? What is certain: without the Inca civil war, the Spanish would not have conquered South America. Something else is even more certain: Without the conquest, the Spanish could not have pillaged and plundered South America. For the conquistadores, El Dorado was real; it happened. They sent ton after ton of gold and silver back to Spain. Much of the loot came from the Chordeleg area of Ecuador, home of the Patecte. That historical fact forms the hardcore of our key philosophical-cultural tenet: The Patecte is the icon of El Dorado. Without the shiploads of gold and silver sent to Spain, the world today would be a different place. The economist John Maynard Keynes: “From the earliest times of which we have record-back, say, to two thousand years before Christ-down to the beginning of the eighteenth century, there was no very great change in the standard of life of the average man living in the civilised centres of the earth… The modern age opened; I think, with the accumulation of capital which began in the sixteenth century. … [T]his was initially due to the rise of prices, and the profits to which that led, which resulted from the treasure of gold and silver which Spain brought from the New World into the Old… From the sixteenth century, with a cumulative crescendo after the eighteenth, the great age of science and technical inventions began... What is the result? In spite of an enormous growth in the population of the world… the average standard of life in Europe and the United States has been raised, I think, about fourfold.” John Maynard Keynes, “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren” (1930) To recapitulate: No Inca civil war, no Spanish conquest. No conquest, no colossal amounts of plunder sent to Europe. No plunder sent to Europe, no modern era. I will amend that statement in a moment. “No modern era” --what does that mean on a real life level, i.e., the daily world where we live and work? Occidental readers, forget your car and TV; your cellphone, computer and refrigerator too – things which science and technology provided you. Forget the clothes you are wearing, the chair you are sitting in. You would be seeing and wearing and sitting in a different word. One that would be at least four-times poorer. * * * I wonder what would … Let´s turn our inquiry to South America: Without conquistadores pillaging and plundering, fantastic quantities of gold and silver would have remained in South America. Or, would somebody else have showed up and stolen them anyway? The English? I don´t know. Do you? Anyway, precious metals are not the only thing that would have remained. South America´s indigenous cultures might have developed in their own normal, organic way. In fact, without the Spanish conquest, many if not most of the things frequently associated with South America – corruption, bureaucracy, dictatorship, violence – might not be there. Who knows? Do you? One thing is certain. Had its indigenous cultures been left alone, Latin America right now would be a different place. Unrecognizable. For openers, what languages/s would South Americans be speaking? Not Spanish, that´s for sure. There would have been no wars for independence. Independence from whom? Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile...: the nations of Latin America as we know them would not exist. Indeed, would there be no Latin American nations? Would there be states of a larger entity or entities, such as in the United States? Here comes the amendment I mentioned. As Keynes noted, the influx of gold and silver from the New World to the Old made possible the birth of the modern era in Europe. I wonder … If all that gold and silver had stayed in South America, would South America – not Europe –have given birth to the modern era? If so, how would that era have been different? We come to the crux of the matter: Had its gold and silver not been stolen, would South America – not North America and Western Europe -- be the most economically developed continent in the world? Talk about a reversal of fortune. Who knows? Do you? Just wondering…that´s all. "Me pregunto qué pasaría si..." “Me pregunto qué pasaría si…” * * * Me pregunto qué habría sucedido si ... Yo no sé. * * * Me pregunto qué hubiera pasado si ... Me pregunto, qué hubiera … What on earth (or elsewhere) is going on?
Why is it that Pre-Columbian artifacts are both legally and illegally bought, sold, owned? A case study: Would ownership of the Patecte by a museum or private individual be a crime? I will now oversimplify a horrendously complex matter: To understand why there are trainloads of ambiguity surrounding Pre-Columbian artifacts, you need to start with a year: “1970.” The 1970 UNESCO Convention on The Means of Prohibiting and Preventing The Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property sought to prohibit the sale and possession of artifacts found AFTER the convention was adopted. By those standards, if it was legally acquired by a museum or individual in the 1800s, the Patecte would today be legally owned and exempt from repatriation demands by the Ecuadorian Government. Artifacts discovered AFTER the 1970 Treaty´s adoption are presumably in another category -- that of illegality. “Presumably,” because there is a fudge factor in dating the year when a relic was discovered. Furthermore, among other things, government export authorizations are, like the relics themselves, commodities which are bought and sold. You just saw the key to the “why” of the entire legal mess: Individual nations are charged with enforcing the Treaty. Keep in mind the United Nations is a system of laws, regulations, etc. AMONG nations, not OVER nations. There is something else to keep in mind; we will present it shortly. In addition to dealers and private collectors, young art museums building their collections are disinclined to adhere to the UNESCO Convention. As do tomb raiders, they tend to view Pre-Columbian artifacts as artworks, hence archaeological context is not a major concern. (Yes, they argue, it would be interesting to know the circumstances in which the “Mona Lisa” was created. However, that knowledge is not necessary to appreciate the painting). For a highly informative article that will introduce you to the arcane legal-illegal relic labyrinth, Google search "The meaning of 1970 for the acquisition of archaeological objects" (Patty Gerstenblith). Entering is the easy part. In the labyrinth´s jumble of ins and outs – all the “yes buts,” “maybe´s,” “however´s” -- there are more ins than outs. The article notes the (somewhat) bottom line: “While the date of 1970 has no legal significance, it is sometimes viewed as a proxy for legality. That is, if an archaeological object is documented as being outside of its country of origin before that date, it is less likely that any illegality is attached to the object. Even if the object is classified as stolen property or illegally exported or imported, the illegality occurred so long ago that any action to recover it will be barred by the statute of limitations.” What I learned as an expert witness in Federal Court: (i) When political power or large sums of money are involved -- such as political campaigns – most laws are written to be evaded. The black market for relics has a top-side estimate of $3 billion per year. Guess what follows. (ii) In general, the judicial branch seeks not to clarify but to obfuscate. The purpose of all the conflicting decisions and lack of clarity is to generate lawsuits. More grist for the mill. Has the 1970 UNESCO Treaty degenerated into a Full Employment Act for lawyers, lobbyists and bureaucrats? Our documentary will seek a full-scale review by the UN of the 50-year old Treaty. Traducción: ¿POR QUÉ? ¿LEGAL? ¿ILLEGAL? We have made posts on two questions I am asked repeatedly:
(1) What is the Patecte´s monetary value? (ii) How old is the Patecte? We come to the third most frequently-asked question: What is the Patecte´s size? * * * Born in Quito, Ecuador, Federico González Suárez (1844-1917) was a scholar-priest. He was a true pioneer in the fullest sense of the word. He wrote numerous books, and although he committed errors, he continues to be rightfully viewed as the cornerstone of scholarly inquiry in a variety of fields. To sum up: I have never met a Latin American historian, archaeologist or anthropologist who did not know who González Suárez was. We noted previously that the only material proof the Patecte ever existed is an oil painting commissioned by the Patecte´s discoverer, the legendary tomb raider Antonio Heduvides Serrano. Is it possible to measure the Patecte without ever seeing the Patecte? Of course not, you answer. To ask the question is to answer it. However, as we continue to point out, the road to the Patecte is paved with double and triple-bottomed boxes. The size question is an exquisite example. * * * In 1892, González Suárez wrote of the Patecte: “This artwork seemed so remarkable and so curious that before melting it for the gold of which it was made, they first produced an exact copy of it in an oil painting of the same dimensions as the original relieve. From that painting our second plate in this Atlas was made ... The destruction of so many objects, of whose archaeological value no one thought of back then, has been very damaging to history. Irreparable under all considerations.” (“Atlas Arqueológico Ecuatoriano” in “Historia General de la República del Ecuador,” p. 64) [My translation. For the original text, see the Spanish translation below] To know the dimensions of the Patecte, then, all that is required is to get the Heduvides painting, take out a ruler and... Easier said than done. Almost 30 years after González Suárez published the above note, another scholar-priest, Julio-Maria Matovelle, also used the Heduvides painting for the basis of an artwork -- a lithograph in his book “Cuenca de Tomebamba” (1921). Then -- exactly as did the Patecte -- the painting vanished, seemingly forever. Matovelle´s lithograph of the Patecte also disappeared, but that is another story. After 7 years of investigation, we found the Heduvides painting. We know where it was after 1921, and why. Our documentary film will show it to the general public for the first time, expertly restored and in full color. Of course, I took out a ruler. We know the exact size of the Patecte. Or do we? How can we be certain that González Suárez was right when he stated the painting was “the same dimensions” as the Patecte? After all, the Patecte was discovered in 1869, more than 20 years before González Suárez published his note. Big men make big mistakes. Was González Suárez relying on second or third-hand information? What the “exact copy” Patecte size issue boils down to: Where did González Suárez get his information?
Recap of Part 1: How big is the lost gold Patecte of Ecuador? It is possible to know its exact size without ever seeing the Patecte. Pioneer archaeologist and historian Federico González Suárez (1844-1917) wrote the Patecte “seemed so remarkable and so curious that… they first produced an exact copy of it in an oil painting of the same dimensions as the original gold relief.” [My translation. For original text in Spanish, see below] Sounds clear-cut, simple. However, the Patecte was discovered in 1869. González Suárez published the above note in 1892, more than two decades later. Maybe, his information was second or third-hand. Whom was he talking to? We have an idea. * * * Indication #1: In his 1878 book, “Estudio histórico sobre los cañaris,” González Suárez published a detailed description of the contents of the tomb containing the Patecte. Here it is: "A hole was dug in search of treasures. A tomb was found, within which there was only a single corpse, lying on the ground on its back; on its head there was a golden tiara or turban. Next to the cadaver was a large jug, an ax, and a framed artwork [sic], all of gold. An object made of chonta [palmtree] wood was also found next to the corpse, covered in a thin silver cloth, and adorned with various relief works carved in wood and silver. Who was the man whose grave had just been discovered? Was he a major ruler? He was, perhaps, a priest. The mind stirs forming various guesses; but one thing can be assured with certainty, namely, that the grave must have been of a remarkable person and of a great man of the nation.” [My translation. For the original text, see below] González Suárez is so precise he gives the impression he was standing there watching the opening of the tomb. Exactly that exactness made me suspect something… We know from his colleague scholar-priest, Julio-Maria Matovelle, that González Suárez never saw the Patecte. His two illustrations of the Patecte were second-hand, derivative, based on the oil painting he mentioned above. The painting was commissioned by Heduvides Serrano, the legendary tomb raider who discovered the Patecte. To have such a precise knowledge of the tomb contents without being present at their discovery means…what? Indication #2: In order to have access to the painting, González Suárez had to have the permission of the painting´s owner. The owner of the painting at the time, 1878, was none other than…Heduvides Serrano. I have never seen hard evidence the two men knew each other. No letters, no photos, no eyewitness testimonies have surfaced to date. However, I did find an anecdote to that effect. Indication #3: Our post “What Is it?” (August 26, 2019) discussed a strange object found in a Chordeleg tomb. Ecuadorian scholar and writer Alejandro Efrain Izquierdo López wrote that Heduvides “gave the object to Gonzáles Suárez at the suggestion of the scholar priest Julio Matovelle” (“entregó dicha pieza a González Suárez, a insinuación del religioso doctor Julio Matovelle.”) Did the scholar and the tomb raider -- González Suárez and Heduvides Serrano -- not only shake hands but collaborate on certain matters? True, we have only circumstantial evidence. I think, however, the three indications together justify two conclusions: (i) Federico González Suárez and Heduvides Serrano knew each other. (ii) It was none other than Heduvides Serrano who informed González Suárez not only about the contents of the tomb containing the Patecte but also told him the oil painting was the exact size as the Patecte. Images: (1) Object discovered in a Pre-Columbian tomb near Chordeleg, Ecuador. Is it proof of something vital but never before discussed? (2) The Patecte. Exactamente esa exactitud me hizo sospechar algo... They say truth is stranger than fiction.
Some things are stranger still… Our prior post established a connection between the pioneer archaeologist, anthropologist and historian Federico González Suárez (1844-1917), and Antonio Heduvides Serrano, the legendary tomb raider who discovered the Patecte in 1869. Heduvides, we believe, provided González Suárez with matchless information about Pre-Columbian relics and tombs in the Chordeleg area, Did Heduvides reveal to González Suárez what happened to the Patecte? González Suárez wrote: “This artwork seemed so remarkable and so curious that before melting it for the gold of which it was made, they first produced an exact copy of it in an oil painting of the same dimensions as the original relieve. For the original text, see the Spanish translation below] "Before melting it for the gold of which it was made…" Sounds definitive. The Patecte was destroyed for its metal content. The Patecte is no more – lost forever. Case closed. Well... We have noted time and again the road to the Patecte is paved with double and triple-bottomed boxes. For every Patecte story, there is an equal and opposite Patecte story. Our prior post showed that another scholar-priest, Julio-María Matovelle (1852-1929), also knew Heduvides Serrano. Our documentary will present evidence that Matovelle´s relationship with the Serrano family continued after Heduvides died. Contrary to González Suárez, Matovelle said the Patecte was not melted down. Rather, Heduvides sold it to an archaeological museum in Paris. Matovelle´s comment is in a footnote in his book “Cuenca de Tomebamba” (1921). Destroyed by Heduvides or preserved in a European museum? Those conflicting views prevail to this day among Latin American scholars. Whichever of the two boxes you open, more boxes will instantly appear beneath it: (1) González Suárez was right. The gold Patecte was melted, destroyed. However, the Patecte was never only a metal relief. González Suárez´ description of the tomb containing the Patecte (see our prior post) mentioned an “objeto” next to the corpse made of chonta (palm wood). That object is understood by some experts to be the mold from which the gold relief Patecte was fashioned. The mold -- not the gold relief – is now in a European museum. (2) The mold was in a European museum. However, it was accidentally broken and tossed out. It no longer exists. (3) The mold of the gold Patecte was thrown away. However, before the mold was broken, a plaster cast was made. The cast – the mold of the mold -- is in a European museum. Being of no interest aesthetically, it has never been publicly exhibited. (4) Matovelle was right. The gold Patecte was sold to a European museum. However, it never arrived. The Chordeleg grandson of a “huaquero” (tomb raider) who worked with Heduvides told me the ship transporting the Patecte sank in route. The Patecte is on the bottom of the Atlantic. (5) The ship transporting the Patecte to Europe did not sink. The Patecte and other gold relics of Heduvides safely arrived in France. However, the year was 1871, when the Paris Commune seized control. In the reigning chaos, the Patecte was stolen. It is likely in the hands of a descendant of the private collector who purchased it from the thief. The Patecte may be stuck in a trunk in someone´s attic. * * * Other fates of the Patecte that are sometimes mentioned: (6) The Patecte is in the Vatican Museum. (7) The Patecte is in the Versailles Museum. (8) The Patecte was in the enormous collection of gold relics which Heduvides took to Peru. He ordered all of them to be melted into gold coins by the National Mint in Lima, Peru. (See our 2-part series of posts “The Patecte: An Astounding Family Story”) (9) The Peruvian Mint did not melt Heduvides´ gold relics into coins. However, the steam ship carrying the relics back to Guayaquil. Ecuador, sank in route. The Patecte is on the bottom of the Pacific. (10) The steamship transporting the relics sank – but not by accident. Criminals in Lima spotted Heduvides´ colossal fortune in gold. Pirates attacked the steamer, offloaded his treasure, then scuttled the ship. The Patecte is in the hands of descendants of an unknown private collector. We are investigating each and every alternative explanation. Our documentary will present the results. .
Fate is what happens to you. Destiny is what you do with fate. The ancient Cañaris had far more of a fate than a destiny. Such is the marrow of tragedy. Clearly, the Cañaris´ end was mostly due to circumstances beyond their control. In less than a century, they were brutally colonized, first by Incas then by Spaniards. When did the Cañaris create the Patecte? Nobody knows; estimates run from 500 BC to 1500 AD. Our documentary includes an archaeological excavation of a Cañari tomb/tombs in the Chordeleg, Ecuador area where the Patecte was discovered. Samples will be Carbon 14-dated and the age of the Patecte will then be inferred. Whatever its age, the ancient Patecte poses this question: Did the Patecte prophesize the fate of the Cañaris? Look again at the image of the Patecte. What do you see? * * * THE CAÑARIS FATE One of Ecuador´s top historians, Gustavo Reinoso Hermida, noted the Cañaris consist of two groups: (1) Cañaris who remained in their homeland in what today are the provinces of Azuay and Cañar in Ecuador; (2) Cañaris who were forcibly relocated by the Inca rulers in other area of their empire, notably Peru and Bolivia. It has been estimated that this group – the “mitimaes” -- numbered 70,000. (1) The Cañaris who stayed in their homeland were almost totally wiped out by war, massacres and pestilence. When the Spaniards arrived in the 1530s, only 3,000 Cañaris remained. Gustavo Reinoso: “From the moment the Incas sought to overwhelm and subjugate the Cañaris, the life of this courageous people suffered a relentless coercion, persecution, torture and liquidation, through executions of their leaders, massacres of the common people and forced resettlement of entire communities as mitimaes to the most remote places of the Empire of the Sun. They were replaced in their homeland by a hodgepodge of ethnicities and cultures resigned to the subjection of Inca absolutism. With so much hemorrhage and population uprooting, the province of Cañar was virtually without Cañaris. Therefore, if we want to deepen our knowledge of the last Cañaris, we must look for them mainly in Peru and Bolivia. ”* Sidebar: please see our posts in search of Cañaris outside Ecuador who still speak the Cañari language. (2) The Cañaris who were forcibly resettled underwent with time a cultural genocide rather than a physical one. Gustavo Reinoso: “The Cañarsis mitimaes ... living in [Peru] enjoyed privileges granted by Vaca de Castro - Governor of Lima representing the King of Spain Carlos I -, from 1542 forward, for extraordinary services rendered as allies, beginning with the arrival of Francisco Pizarro in 1533, up to the war of independence of Peru from Spain ... The cañari mitmaes ... in Chiara, Peru retained their nationality of origin and maintained a rigid inbreeding without mixing their ayllus [local family-based communities] with others, in order to keep their nobility and purity. They were exempt from taxes and compulsory hard labor, with only the obligation to assist in services demanded by the Spanish royalty and government.”** Spanish gratitude to the Cañaris for services rendered proved not to be eternal. Not only was there an on-going trend to undermine Cañari privileges, “It was in 1854, following the end of the indigenous tribute by Ramón Castilla, that the Cañari ayllus and hundreds of other ones from the Andean area entered an unstoppable period of disintegration, to the point that today it is very difficult to locate and distinguish them when visiting and walking around in those areas.”*** In short, the fate of mitimaes Cañaris was to be merged, submerged. Gustavo Reinoso quotes Dr. Hugo Burgos Guevara: "Today's Cañari is a colonial and also a republican creation. He has little or nothing to do with the tribal societies which the Incas and Spaniards initially encountered."**** Guevara´s book was published in 2003; Gustavo Reinoso´s in 2006. Since then a resurgence of pre-Hispanic identification has begun among Cañari descendants. * * * In asking if the Patecte foretold the Cañaris´ fate, we are by no means entering a paranormal realm. The unconscious perceives far more than what consciousness sees-- and the Patecte is first and foremost a creation of the unconscious. Otherwise stated: “Extra-sensory perception” got a bum rap when it was labelled extra-sensory. Much of the time, there is nothing extra-sensory about it. Hunch, intuition, premonition, suspicion, bolt from the blue: the phenomenon is known everywhere and has many names. Most contemporary scholars view the Incas´ and Aztecs´ prophecies of inevitable doom as naïve hokum, witchcraft. However, that modern, Occidental condemnation is based on a relatively recent idea in the world: progress. To wit: In the Western European world, the 1500s-1800s were a period of astonishing scientific and technological breakthroughs that were both the cause and effect of the rise of the bourgeoisie and the nation-state. Those breakthroughs were accompanied, stimulated, and legitimized by a revolution in thought propagated by, among others, Copernicus, Galileo, Descartes, Kant, Lock, Spinoza, Newton, and Montesquieu. A new era, very unlike anything prior to it, dawned: “Man was alone, quite alone, in a vast and complex cosmic machine. Gone were the angelic hosts, gone the devils and their pranks, gone the daily miracles of supernatural intervention…”***** The new constellation of people and facts, things and ideas was modernism. It had its polar star: “The whole educated world in the eighteenth century was convinced, as never before or since, that the most beneficent and the most divine force in human life, man’s supreme achievement and his brightest jewel, is science.”****** Science’s success in turn allowed for the creation and fructification of a new idea in the world: progress, or a faith in an ascending future following knowable laws. Reasonable plans could be made; goals could be envisioned, worked on, saved for; dreams could even be dreamed about the perfectibility of mankind and society. The Incas, Cañaris, Aztecs – indeed, the entire Pre-Columbian world – were manifestly on another track. As noted above, Western civilization views it as ignorant, superstitious. But if that is true, it is not the only truth: The Newtonian or “modern” scientific perspective outlined above can explain many things. But not everything. 2.
