As President of Ecuador, Gabriel García Moreno (1821-1875) searched for foreign allies to help him consolidate control over his divided, troubled country. In 1862, he sent a gift to Queen Victoria of England: a Pre-Columbian gold crown unearthed in the Chordeleg area. Dr. Benigno Malo Vega, director of the Revista de Antropología, author of "El Tesoro Precolombino de Sígsig," and member of the Patecte search team, reveals in our documentary how the crown came into García Moreno´s possession. The gift to Queen Victoria raises a major question: What other Pre-Columbian artifacts did the Ecuadorian government possess? The Patecte? Our search team will go to Carondelet, the presidential palace in Quito, Ecuador. It will interview President Lenín Moreno and investigate Carondelet´s archival material on the Patecte and the gold crown given to Queen Victoria. I am frequently asked if the word “Patecte” means something. Federico González Suárez, the scholar-priest who is one of the founding fathers of archaeology/anthropology in South America, found similarities in quiché and Ecuadorian Native words. Quiché is the Mayan language spoken in Guatemala and Campeche, Mexico. González Suárez: “Pa-tec-te” = “pa-tec-zec”. “Pa” means over, on top of. “Tec” means to pile up, accumulate. “Zec” means a thing hidden underground, treasures. (Federico González Suárez, “Historia General de la Historia del Ecuador” p. 176) The quiché thesis is certainly intriguing. However, the French scholar Paul Rivet, another pioneer in South America archaeology-anthropology, concluded it was highly "fragile.” To this day it remains dubious that Mayan civilization extended to Ecuador. R. Verneau and Paul Rivet, “Etnografía Antigua del Ecuador,” p. 275. 275. “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” -- Pablo Picasso -- Our post, “The Meaning of The Patecte” generated a huge amount of interest. That post discussed what the Patecte meant to the Pre-Columbian Cañaris who created it. Equinoxes, solstices – the Patecte is rightfully referred to frequently as the Cañari Calendar. That meaning emerged from the life-or-death consequences for an agrarian society of the earth´s seasons. We, today, have other worries, as shown by the fact that very few of us know what an equinox is. Unlike Pre-Columbian people, the fact of the matter is most of us don´t need to know – and we don´t. We ended that post with a question: what does the Patecte mean to us today, here, now? * * * Our basic assumption: The Patecte welled up from the realm of archetypes, i.e., universal, archaic patterns and images in the collective unconscious of mankind. They are inherited potentials – the psychic equivalent of instincts. It cannot be overemphasized that in interpreting archetypes, e.g., the serpent, bird, and feline of the Patecte, great caution is in order. Although archetypes do not vary over time and place, different cultures develop them differently. What, then, does the Patecte´s serpent signify? Conventional knowledge about snakes in dreams is all over the Internet. At the risk of too much reductionism, I will summarize that knowledge with Sigmund Freud´s tenet. “Most of those animals which are utilized as genital symbols in mythology and folklore play this part also in dreams: the fish, the snail, the cat, …, but above all the snake, which is the most important symbol of the male member.” (Sigmund Freud, “The Interpretation of Dreams,” Chapter 6E) Freud´s finding, I am sure, was new and shocking in its day -- the Victorian world he lived in. Today, to the contrary, Freud´s comment has become so trivial we are left to wonder why nobody said it before him. To his credit, Freud warned about universal explanations of universal symbols, and we take him at his word. Starting with snakes. Unlike Western European culture in which snakes are viewed as treacherous and evil, for the Cañaris, snakes were benevolent. Their mythology holds that their first mother, Pachamama, was the mother of all things. Pachamama was a giant serpent that disappeared into a lake. Our other post on the meaning of the Patecte noted: “That narrative no doubt seems bizarre to Western readers; however, there are similar myths in other cultures. Chinese people, for example, see themselves as descendants of a dragon, a reptilian creature that they associate not with a fire-breathing monster but with good fortune, power, happiness. Dragons are said to live on the bottom of lakes, rivers, seas.” For the Mayan story of a great, revered serpent, Kulkulkan, please watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0kOyGZxKh4 . It communicates with impact the awe and veneration snakes generate. By no means are we suggesting conventional wisdom about snakes in dreams should be ignored or that it is always mistaken. On the contrary, as Picasso indicated, you have to first know rules, e.g., conventions, before you can later meaningfully break them. An example of snake in dreams conventional wisdom which pertains directly to the Patecte: “View of the open mouth of a snake with teeth full of poison, from the point of view of Gustav Miller is a warning about any form of hostility from people, fate or the dreamer itself.” https://checkmydream.com/dream-meaning/snake--with--teeth Hostility…fate…the dreamer himself..: Did the Patecte foresee the cataclysmic disaster awaiting the Cañaris? -- the Inca invasion and conquest of their homeland, the massacre of 60,000 Cañari males by Inca ruler Atahualpa, the forced resettlement of 75,000 Cañaris to distant parts of the Inca Empire; the brutal conditions imposed by the Spanish colonial empire; the succession of earthquakes, famines, epidemics? Did the Cañaris somehow unconsciously bring the catastrophe – part of it, anyway -- on themselves? Among other experts, Anne Laurain, a Jungian psychoanalyst and member of the Patecte search team, will discuss in our documentary the meaning of the Patecte serpent. I will not second-guess here what she will say. What I will do is provide an introduction to her discussion in the form of quotes from Carl Jung. I think you will discover a richness of text in, around and in spite of conventional wisdom. * * * "More especially the threat to one’s inmost self from dragons and serpents points to the danger of the newly acquired consciousness being swallowed up again by the instinctive psyche, the unconscious. The lower vertebrates have from earliest times been favourite symbols of the collective psychic substratum, which is localized anatomically in the subcortical centres, the cerebellum and the spinal cord. These organs constitute the snake. Snake-dreams usually occur, therefore, when the conscious mind is deviating from its instinctual basis." Carl Jung, “Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious,” page 166. “Perhaps the commonest dream symbol of transcendence is the snake, as represented by the therapeutic symbol of the Roman god of medicine Aesclepius, which has survived to modern times as a sign of the medical profession. This was originally a nonpoisonous tree snake; as we see it, coiled around the staff of the healing god, it seems to embody a kind of mediation between earth and heaven. -- Carl Jung, ”Man and His Symbols,” page 153. “The idea of transformation and renewal by means of the serpent is a well-substantiated archetype. It is [a] healing [symbol]." Carl Jung, "Collected Works 7," Par 184. “The anima [NOTE: for Jung the anima is the totality of the unconscious feminine psychological qualities a man possesses; the animus is the masculine ones possessed by a woman] also has affinities with animals, which symbolize her characteristics. Thus she can appear as a snake or a tiger or a bird.” Carl Jung, Collected Works, 9i, para. 358. [NOTE: The Andean Triad just appeared. Anima and animus: we will examine the Patecte in those terms later.] “This serpent does not represent ´reason` or anything approaching it, but rather symbolises a peculiar autonomous mind which can possess one completely, a spirit of revelation which gives us ´Intuitionen´ (intuitions).” Carl Jung, “ETH, Alchemy,” page 215. “The serpent represents magical power, which also appears where animal drives are aroused imperceptibly in us.” Carl Jung, “Liber Novusm,” page 366. “The serpent taught me the unconditional difference in essence between the two principles in me. If I look across from forethinking to pleasure, I first see the deterrent poisonous serpent. If I feel from pleasure across to forethinking, likewise I feel first the cold cruel serpent… The serpent is the earthly essence of man of which he is not conscious. Its character changes according to peoples and lands, since it is the mystery that flows to him from the nourishing earth-mother… The serpent has the weight of the earth in itself but also its changeability and germination from which everything that becomes emerges. It is always the serpent that causes man to become enslaved now to one, now to the other principle, so that it becomes error. One cannot live with forethinking alone, or with pleasure alone. You need both. But you cannot be in forethinking and in pleasure at the same time, you must take turns being in forethinking and pleasure, obeying the prevailing law, unfaithful to the other so to speak. But men prefer one or the other. Some love thinking and establish the art of life on it. They practice their thinking and their circumspection, so they lose their pleasure. Therefore they are old and have a sharp face. The others love pleasure, they practice their feeling and living. Thus they forget thinking. Therefore they are young and blind. Those who think base the world on thought, those who feel, on feeling. You find truth and error in both. The way of life writhes like the serpent from right to left and from left to right, from thinking to pleasure and from pleasure to thinking. Thus the serpent is an adversary and a symbol of enmity, but also a wise bridge that connects right and left through longing, much needed by our life." Carl Jung, “The Red Book,” page 247. “If one waits long enough, one sees how the Gods all change into serpents and underworld dragons in the end. This is also the fate of the Logos: in the end it poisons us all.” Carl Jung, “The Red Book,” page 280. “But the serpent is also life. In the image furnished by the ancients, the serpent put an end to the childlike magnificence of paradise; they even said that Christ himself had been a serpent.” Carl Jung, “Liber Novus,” Footnote 136, page 243. "…the serpent is the hypostatic, underlying materia (the essence of matter), which sinks into the water, or is as it were in the water, and, through illusion, it deceives the senses.” Carl Jung, “ETH, Alchemy,” page 219. “If I am not conjoined through the uniting of the Below and the Above, I break down into three parts: the serpent, and in that or some other animal form I roam, living nature daimonically, arousing fear and longing. The human soul, living forever within you. The celestial soul, as such dwelling with the Gods, far from you and unknown to you, appearing in the form of a bird.” Carl Jung’s Soul to him, “Black Books,” Appendix C., Page 370. https://jungiangenealogy.weebly.com/serpent.html * * * I close on two notes from Jung. First, the power of the Patecte is not in anything you, I or anybody else says about it, but in its archaic "animal power." . “An ethical fraternity with its mythical Nothing, not infused by any archaic-infantile driving force, is a pure vacuum and can never evoke in man the slightest trace of that age-old animal power which drives the migrating bird across the sea…” Carl Jung, “Freud/Jung Letters,” page 294. And second, prevailing Western philosophy in the form of conventional wisdom fights the Jungian analysis of archetypes because the latter challenges the notion that we are all ultimately, unequivocally, absolutely free -- that we are sovereign individuals consisting of eternal, autonomous souls: “Why should the psyche be the only living thing that is outside laws of determination? We follow archetypal patterns as the weaver-bird does. This assumption is far more probable than the mystical idea of absolute freedom.” Carl Jung, “Letters” Vol. II, pages 450-451 Images: El Patecte, video of theTemple of Kukulkan (El Castillo) in Chichen Itzá. What makes the Patecte so mysterious? Why does it have a bird? What follows is no more than a highly rudimentary introduction to a highly complex subject. It presents both conventional and -- at least for Westerners -- unconventional viewpoints. As in our post “The Patecte Serpent,” we will leave a more definitive answer to the experts of our search team documentary. . Perhaps, the most meaningful answer to questions of meaning comes in psychological terms. The Patecte welled up from the realm of archetypes, i.e., universal, archaic patterns and images in the collective unconscious of humanity. They are inherited potentials – the psychic equivalent of instincts. Universal and timeless, archetypes provide a basis of commun for us not only with ancient Cañaris but also with people everywhere here and now. Archetypes are unconscious phenomena. They manifest themselves in many forms, notably in dreams and classic fairy tales. Thus, to begin to understand the Patecte bird, we rephrase our question: What does a bird in a dream or fairy tale mean? Extreme caution is in order. Although archetypes do not vary, different cultures develop them differently. As do serpents, birds provide a classic example of that difference. * * * Our post “The Patecte Serpent” had two purposes: (i) create a rudimentary foundation for future discussion. (ii) Present a plausible reason why the Patecte appears to Westerners as unknowable, inscrutable. That reason was readily identified: In Occidental culture, serpents are evil. Hence, the serpent exiting the mouth of the Patecte´s hybrid bird-serpent-feline figure can only be treacherous and dangerous, if not horrific. Our prior post showed fear and hatred of serpents is not universal. Other cultures have a different pair of glasses in which serpents appear as sacred, fertile -- the creators of everything that exists, including humans. Such was the case of the Pre-Columbian Cañaris who created the Patecte. In their mythology their First Mother was a gigantic snake, Pachamama, that disappeared into a lake. Their second mother was the guacamaya (macaw); more on that shortly. The condemnation by Westerners of serpents is heightened by the Patecte guacamaya. Once again, two very opposing cultural understandings are in play. * * * Birds, in general, are auspicious symbols. This is the conventional wisdom: “From times immemorial, birds have been regarded as omens or forecasters of future events and also believed to have deep symbolic significance. Several ancient cultures have held these winged creatures to symbolize the human soul and considered their flight to be representative of the soul’s journey in pursuit of higher knowledge. Additionally, the flight of birds makes them powerful metaphors for a range of human emotions and moods. Birds are generally considered a link between the earth and the heaven, and symbolic of transcendence and eternal life. With their ability to roam the earth as well as soar up into the sky, birds symbolize freedom. Meanwhile, their proximity to the heavens made them seen as messengers of the gods. As a result, sighting different birds came to be regarded as good or bad signs, with their appearance being like indications from God.” http://weknowyourdreams.com/parrot.html I will skip over (for now) a continuing debate about whether the Patecte bird is a condor or a guacamaya. For this post I will go with the guacamaya for reasons given below. Note that in the bit of conventional wisdom cited above, in what is generally a highly positive view of birds, a small caveat appears: some birds are "bad signs." The Patecte bird is a guacamaya. Guacamayas are parrots. Here is the conventional Western wisdom about what a parrot in a dream means: “A parrot represents mocking attitude of others, mocking attitude of self, betrayal, gossip, back biting…” http://weknowyourdreams.com/parrot.html In brief, for Westerners the parrot is a highly negative symbol. However, as with serpents, that view is not shared everywhere… One of the psychoanalyst C.G. Jung´s most prominent followers, Marie Louise von Franz, examined bird motifs in her book, “Individuation in Fairy Tales.” Representative of the Arabic tales she analyzed was “The White Parrot.” (Spain). A witch instructs the sister of a young boy to search for a valuable white parrot. “Whoever catches it will be rich all his life.” (p. 97). An old man tells the boy where to find the parrot, and warns him to wait until the bird is asleep before trying to catch it. Otherwise, the bird will escape and the boy will be turned to stone, just as so many before him. The boy tries to catch the parrot too soon; the bird escapes and the boy is petrified. What does the fairy tale mean? Psychotherapist Greg Bogart: “The valuable parrot is a symbol of the Self as the source of deepest value. It represents the value of listening to the unconscious, which can influence our inner and outer realities, mysteriously changing our destiny. Trying to catch the parrot too soon reminds me of haste, premature action, carelessness, not allowing things to ripen to the proper moment. Von Franz analyzes ´the petrification which occurs if one tries to snatch the parrot too soon´ (p. 55). Petrification…represents book religions that petrify the truth ´religious mechanism devoid of inner meaning or inner experience.´ It also signifies being ´psychologically petrified so that no more development is possible.´ (p. 57). Greg Bogart, “Dreamwork and Self-Healing: Unfolding The Symbols of The Unconscious.” "Deepest value." Here the parrot is attributed with exactly the opposite traits ascribed to it in Western cultures, i.e., gossip, back-biting, sterile and mindless repetition, Von Franz sums up: “The parrot is the spirit of the truth, …good is rewarded and evil punished…The parrot is full of pearls of wisdom and precious stones, and the knowledge of the truth. It knows the future and supernatural things… It is a symbol for the mysterious knowledge which the unconscious speaks.” (pp. 55-6) * * * The guacamaya occupies a special place in the Cañari creation myth. During a gigantic flood, two brothers fled to a cave on a mountain top. They were the only survivors. After the waters subsided they left their shelter to search for food. When they returned they discovered someone had prepared meals for them. Every day, the meals continued. One of the brothers hid in the cave to see who their mysterious benefactor was. He saw two guacamayas with faces of women. The brothers and the guacamayas subsequently mated, and their offspring were the first Cañari people. That creation myth is a basic reference point for understanding the Patecte bird. But there is reason to believe the bird´s meaning does not stop there… A member of our Patecte search team, Dr. Juan Chacón, analyzed the Patecte in cultural-historical terms in his book “Guacha Opari Pampa.” In a private conversation, he told me the two human faces in the Patecte can be viewed not as separate people but as two phases of the deceased person in the Patecte tomb. The uppermost face is a death mask -- that of the dead man, thin, fading, on its way to oblivion. But the face immediately below it shows the same man awakening, opening wide his eyes. In the third stage he is transformed into the bird-snake-feline figure -- a shamanic vision. The posture and attitude of the hybrid figure exude glory; the head is thrown backwards in triumph. Another bird archetype comes to mind -- the phoenix. Here is the conventional wisdom: "The mythical bird, Phoenix is believed to die by fire and then emerge after 500 years from its ashes. As such, it is a symbol of resurrection, immortality, indomitable spirit, transition, and spiritual re-birth. It also represents aggressive behavior. It is believed that seeing a phoenix in your dream could mean overcoming adversity.” https://www.ancient-symbols.com/bird_symbols.html Combined, the Patecte serpent and parrot-phoenix generate something more powerful than power. Fertility and sacredness issue forth from truth, wisdom, prescience, justice, resurrection, indomitability -- immortality. THE CAT IN THE PATECTE (Traducción al fondo)
“Called or not called, it will be there.” -- Delphic inscription – Our previous posts discussed the serpent and bird of the Patecte. We concluded that, together, “The serpent and bird generate something more powerful than power.” In the ancient Cañari perspective, the fertility and sacredness characterizing the serpent issue forth from a parrot (macaw)-phoenix incarnating “truth, wisdom, prescience, justice, resurrection, indomitability -- immortality.” That perspective is a universe away from that of Western Europe, in which the serpent and parrot are negative symbols. We turn now to the Patecte feline. Although there are 10 species of wild cats in South America, only the mountain lion and jaguar are big enough to be likely candidates for the Patecte feline. That feline is visible in the Patecte hybrid figure´s legs, in its right paw extended downward, and in the large tail ending in a castle-like formation. For obvious reasons, it is probably not a jaguar. Why is the mountain lion/puma/cougar (they are one and the same) in the Patecte? What purpose does it serve? Specifically, what can a cat possibly add to the sacredness, fertility and immortality created by the serpent/bird unity? What follows is no more than a highly rudimentary introduction to a highly complex subject. It presents both conventional and unconventional viewpoints. As in our posts on the serpent and bird, we will leave a more thorough review to the experts in our Patecte documentary. Perhaps, the most meaningful answer to questions of meaning -- definitely the one which has the most impact -- is psychological. The Patecte welled up from the realm of archetypes, i.e., universal, archaic patterns and images in the collective unconscious of humanity. They are inherited potentials – the psychic equivalent of instincts. Universal and timeless, archetypes provide a basis of communality for us not only with ancient Cañaris but also with mankind everywhere here and now. Archetypes are unconscious phenomena; they manifest themselves in many forms, notably in dreams and classic fairy tales. Thus, to start to understand the Patecte feline, we rephrase our question: What does a cat in a dream or fairy tale mean? Extreme caution is in order. Although archetypes do not vary, different cultures develop them differently. As do serpents and birds, cats provide a classic example not only of what an archetype is but also of differentiation of archetypes among cultures. Sidebar: Perhaps the severest case of being culture bound is believing oneself not to be culture-bound. I hope these introductory posts on the meaning of the Patecte´s iconography makes that point. Its symbols will never stop telling men who they are – and who they are not. For Westerners who find themselves unable to accept the serpent and parrot as positive symbols, please try to look with emotional detachment upon our discussion as a cross-cultural experience. * * * Two samples of conventional wisdom about felines: 1. “To see a cat in your dream symbolizes an independent spirit, feminine sexuality, creativity, and power. It also represents misfortune and bad luck…The dream may be a metaphor for ´cattiness` or someone who is ´catty´ and malicious. If you see a cat with no tail, then it signifies a loss of independence and lack of autonomy.” http://www.dreammoods.com/dreamdictionary/c2.htm. As mentioned, the Patecte cat has a tail ending in a castle-like formation, indicating no loss of autonomy – yet. Which takes us to someone who is malicious, catty. The Inca invasion of Cañar in the 1400s was centuries in the future when the Patecte was created. Which invites this question: Did the cat in the Patecte foretell the Cañaris´ impending disaster? We will return to this question. 2. “A dream of cats is a link to your feminine side and is associated with females. Cats are normally represented as part of nature and this is demonstrative in femininity or womanhood in your life - whether you are male or female. Cats are very self-sufficient, so your dream may be connected to independence, womanly instincts, originality, and supremacy. Unfortunately, a cat dream may also indicate difficult times or bad luck.” https://www.auntyflo.com/dream-dictionary/cats Commentary: The Cañaris had lived autonomously for thousands of years. Independence and self-sufficiency were, by all accounts, not only their daily reality but also among their most cherished values. An identification of some sort on some level with cats would thus come to them naturally – in the fullest sense of the word. A second time we are told that a cat in dreams can indicate difficult times, misfortune, bad luck. We ask again, but more pointedly: Did its cat make the Patecte an oracle that foretold the forthcoming consummate loss of independence and autonomy centuries later, first at the hands of the Incas and later the Spanish? Again, we will return to this question. Autonomy, power, creativity and self-reliance. The dream cat represents the "anima," which Carl Jung defined as the feminine traits existing in males; the "animus" is the totality of masculine ones in females. But as indicated in the above quote, today it is generally held that both sexes have an anima and animus. What about the particular species of feline in the Patecte, the mountain lion-cougar-puma? Here is some conventional wisdom: "Cougar Dream Symbol –A dream of cougar brings the feminine and natural beauty of the wild into your life. She also symbolizes deep emotion and empowerment… A cougar prowling, hunting its prey can represent sexuality and raw passion. Consider who, what, or where evokes that passion in you when awake. Sometimes a cougar can represent female aggressiveness when you feel cornered. You may feel there is no other way than to fight your way out using pure aggression. Consider who or what shows little or no respect for your boundaries. Who puts your life in danger in some way? This may not mean physically, but can mean the death of a friendship, work situation, thought process, and how others see you.” http://dreamstop.com/cougar-dream-meaning-interpretations/ Commentary: The mountain lion brings the “feminine and natural beauty of the wild into your life.” We would say the feminine and beauty are already in your life -- in your unconscious. The dream cat, if constructively interpreted, serves to make them conscious. Deep emotion, empowerment. The dream mountain lion brings conviction and strength which are vital for action. As we shall see, the word empowerment is particularly insightful. The Cañaris certainly had conviction during the Inca invasion. Although they were defeated, they were not defeated; they continued to resist, waging a type of guerrilla warfare. So grave were its consequences, the Incas felt obligated to export 70,000 Cañaris to distant lands and to replace them with 50,000 Inca colonists who spoke their own language and served as spies. In the Patecte, the mountain lion appears to be hunting its prey, which is the elongated creature (fish? Serpent?) at the bottom of the Patecte. Or, could it be that the lion is putting it back where it belongs? In either case, to take or give life, deep passion is manifested. "Consider who or what shows little or no respect for your boundaries. Who puts your life in danger… " By far, that is the best advice anything or anybody could have offered the Cañaris in their pre-Inca, pre-Hispanic days when they created the Patecte. Here are two native American viewpoints: 1.“Leadership is the main lesson of Mountain Lion and due to that leadership quality in you, others try to knock you off the proverbial mountain. This big cat gives us lessons or medicine in the power of leadership. The goal would be to learn to lead without insisting that others follow your lead. Observe the graceful pounce of a Mountain Lion and you will see a connection between the balance of power, intention, physical strength, and grace. To convert that to human relevance it would be a balance of body, mind and spirit. You will never see this giant feline waste anything, not its energy or its food. It will only take what it needs for survival." Cougar Or Mountain Lion by LaWannaMitchell at Zazzle. 2. “So why is the mountain lion a hard totem? Well, for one thing you are often put into positions where you can become a target for the problems of others... Do not let the choice of others deter your journey. You might need to look at the purpose of your own beliefs. …Having cat medicine can have its pitfalls because being the ´king of the mountain´ does not allow for being human or vulnerable.” http://native-american-totems.com/animal-tot…/mountain-lion/ Commentary: you can "become a target of the problems of others." After Inca ruler Huayna Capac died, his two sons, Atahualpa and Huáscar, began a civil war for control of their father´s Empire. The Cañaris sided with Huáscar who lost, with absolutely catastrophic results for the Cañaris. The deep respect shown the mountain lion in the above citations is a major clue to what the ancient Cañaris felt toward that feline and why they included it in the Patecte. Clean and canny, economical in its movements; a balance of power and grace; in touch with deeper knowledge; willing to go it alone; a leader -- a doer. They say seeing is believing. I once saw a mountain lion in the wild. I guarantee, you won´t believe it is what it is when you see one. For it is truly something else. * * * Our citations noted that a dream cat can indicate misfortune and bad luck, difficult times. We know what happened after the Patecte was created. The Inca conquest of Cañar in the late 1400s; Inca ruler Atahualpa´s massacre of 60,000 male Cañaris; continuous wars; the arrival of 50,000 Inca colonists into the Cañari heartland combined with forced resettlements by the Incas of 70,000 Cañaris in distant lands; massive epidemics; earthquakes; famines; the influx of non-Cañari Indians; barbarous conditions under the Spanish colonial regime – all extinguished (although not entirely) the pre-Inca and pre-Hispanic world of the Patecte. Did the Patecte foretell the massive catastrophe that was to engulf its Cañari creators? I don´t think dreams are prophetic in an extra-sensory perception way. ESP got a bad rap when it was labelled “extra.” There is nothing extra about it. What happens: the unconscious mind perceives far more than consciousness. You walk into a room filled with people; your conscious mind perhaps perceives two or three of them at best. Your unconscious mind, however, takes in everybody there. It then puts things together and gives them back to you symbolically. Fortune tellers have remained in business for thousands of years; the basis is that unconscious perception is passed off as something miraculous, extra. Actually, because all of us have an unconscious, all of us have that gift to a greater or lesser degree. I think the unconscious mind is the source of intuition, which is, after all, what we are talking about. We have to remain alert, reasonable, and not let the unconscious take over. Simply put, the unconscious is not always right when it comes to taxes and other external realities. If it were correct on such matters even 51% of the time, there wouldn´t be a single casino anywhere on earth. * * * The serpent and the bird; sacredness united with truth and wisdom: why add anything else? What could possibly be lacking to immortality? I think we have answered our initial question, Why is the feline in the Patecte? It is there for the same reason it is in the triad of bird/serpent/feline found throughout the ancient Andes. Leadership, self-reliance, independence, power: The cat, the embodiment of femininity, is required to animate the other elements. Give them life; make them stir. The cat is to the Patecte tableau what an operating system is to the computer on which you are reading these words. Without the system your computer, for all its marvelous intricacies and ingenious technology, would just sit there, cold. It is not for nothing that “animates” and “anima” have the same root. Yes, the Patecte cat is necessary, constructive. However, it can also do other things, some of which are amazingly destructive. So much so, I ask, Did it ruin the Cañaris? We will look into this question in our next post. END OF PART 1 TRADUCCIÓN: EL GATO EN EL PATECTE "Llamado o no llamado, estará allí". 2. ¿Qué podría faltar a tal inmortalidad?
Did a cat cause the devastation of the pre-Inca pre-Hispanic world that created the Patecte? The trail to the answer is found in the mountain lion in the Patecte – visible in the right paw, legs and tail -- and the cat in the “Puss in Boots” fairytale. Which calls for an explanation... * * * Our prior post asked, why is a mountain lion/puma/cougar (they are the same thing) in the Patecte? Specifically, what can a cat possibly add to the sacredness and fertility, justice and immortality created by the Patecte´s serpent/bird unity? Our answer: “Leadership, self-reliance, independence, feminine power: The cat is required to animate the other elements. Give them life; make them stir. The cat is to the Patecte tableau what an operating system is to the computer with which you are reading these words.” Without that system your computer, for all its marvelous intricacies and ingenious technology, would just sit there. Dead metal; showing, signifying nothing. The feline is inextricably linked to the “anima” – the collection of feminine traits innate to the homo sapiens psyche. It is not for nothing that “anima” and “animates” have the same root. However, a cat is not an entirely “good” symbol. Our prior post concluded, “Yes, the Patecte cat is necessary, constructive. However, it can also do other things, some of which are amazingly destructive.” What follows is no more than a highly rudimentary introduction to a highly complex subject. It presents both conventional and unconventional viewpoints. As in our previous posts on the Patecte serpent and bird, we will leave a more thorough review of the Patecte cat to the experts in our search documentary. In the meantime… Perhaps, the most meaningful answer to questions of meaning -- certainly the one which has the most impact -- is psychological. The Patecte welled up from the realm of archetypes, i.e., universal, archaic patterns and images in the collective unconscious of humanity. They are inherited potentials – the psychic equivalent of instincts. Serpent, bird, feline… Universal and timeless, archetypes provide a basis of communality for us not only with ancient Cañaris but also with mankind everywhere here and now. Archetypes are unconscious phenomena; they manifest themselves in many forms, notably in dreams and classic fairy tales. Thus, to start to understand the Patecte feline, we rephrase our question: What does a cat in a dream or fairytale mean? Extreme caution is in order. Although archetypes do not vary, different cultures develop them differently. As do serpents and birds, cats provide a classic example not only of what an archetype is but also how an archetype´s meaning differs among cultures. For Westerners who find themselves unable to accept the Patecte serpent and parrot as positive symbols, please try to look with emotional detachment on our discussion as a cross-cultural experience. One that is going to smoke your boots. * * * Hypothesis: the utter devastation of the Cañari world was caused by a single Cañari leader. A frightfully unconscious man, his cat got away from him. The following excerpts are from “The Archetypal Symbolism of Animals” by Barbara Hanna. Her insightful work is based on lectures by psychoanalyst Carl Jung. The bottom line to the cat archetype: ambiguity. Barbara Hannah: “Now independence is both a positive and negative aspect of the real cat. The cat has the most extraordinary independence and self-reliance… There is a story of a woman who was always so efficient, and someone dreamed of her as a black cat that came into a room and took a bunch of yarn, which it mixed into a terrible muddle. The cat had just a marvelous time and finally walked off with its tail held neatly at a right angle…And then everything depends on how nicely you hold your tail… A dog minds terribly if you are displeased with him or not, but the cat doesn´t give a damn…If a cat notices you are in a bad mood, it just disappears… [We] cannot change [our attitude toward our own cat nature] and we not want to but we can give it boots [i.e., somewhat adapt it to human society]. So through a ´cat´s head´ we can connect to its amazing ingenuity, which the cat has kept by maintaining a living relation to deeper levels of absolute knowledge… [T]he cat instinct can enter anywhere, human barriers do not exist for it; it can get to places where we cannot possibly find a way…This same instinct can …engage the unconscious, as its accomplice…[W]e can understand the cat as a symbol of independence and self-reliance, an archetypal image that can help us most in regaining touch with this source. And it can teach us about emotional detachment… Yet we must also remain rationally alert…We can only allow the cat instinct to help us where we really cannot see our way… The cat´s archetypal image is present in us all. It is clearer for women, for the cat…is much more feminine in behavior than, for instance, the dog. Men have the cat also… Thus they do not escape the disastrous tendency of their anima cat to spin plots. She usually hooks on to ambition, power and money where temptations are great and men are not so terribly conscious…In fact, catching plots is the conditio sine qua non of men becoming conscious of their animas. This is the most difficult task of all for men, far more difficult than it is for woman to become conscious of her animus [i.e., masculine traits]… [The archetypal image of the cat can help us], as Ra did in Egypt, or at least to become fully aware of it, putting our trust in it, as the man in “Puss-in-Boots.”” NOTE: in the “Puss-in-Boots” fairy tale, the youngest son of a deceased miller inherits a cat whereas his brothers inherit property. The cat tells him not to worry, that he will help him become rich. The cat then says he wants boots. His new owner spends his last penny on them, which the cat wears constantly. The cat keeps his promise. By amazing ingenuity, intriguing intrigues and incredible audacity, he makes his owner wealthy and powerful. Barbara Hannah continues: “[T]he cat is especially important on account of her tendency to go off…into the depths of the unconscious and to degenerate into all kinds of injurious or even fatal behavior…All that each one of us can do is to work honestly on the archetypal image of the cat in our own souls… [Our cat instinct] can bring us destruction if it is used in plots and black magic, or healing if the magic is tamed and used for a genuine, non-egotistical purpose. It can relax us and help heal our overstrained conscious attitude … [or} make us lazy and false. It can lead us away from our human relationships into a desert of purely autoerotic isolation…[or] it can give us access to the universal knowledge and make us truly self-reliant… [If we can keep our roots and self-reliance] as Puss-in-Boots did, without losing relationship to others and even helping them, we really reach the summit of relating to the luminosity of the cat.” As the incarnation of feminine mystery, throughout history the cat has been both totem and taboo, god and devil. I can think of no archetype that is more ambiguous. (“On the one hand, on the other; there´s the good side and the bad side.”) While cats can adapt to humans, they maintain their own world. Nocturnal and solitary hunters, they have superb vision and famously survive serious accidents. They land on their feet in more ways than one. Finally, cats are regarded as treacherous because they play with mice before eating them. The cat in a nutshell: reproduction and nurturing, vitality and healing are countered by darkness and frenzy, scheming and sabotage. The solution is balance. A cat needs to be domesticated – wear boots – but not too far. If tamed excessively, it loses its natural connection to deeper knowledge, and cannot assist where human rationality proves not up to the task. But if tamed too little or not at all, the cat goes its own way, delving ever deeper into the unconscious psyche, scheming and sowing havoc, falseness, black magic – self-sabotage. It is a question of becoming conscious of an unconscious process. By failing to do so, a single ancient Cañari leader let loose the cat in the catastrophe. PART III will tell what happened.
Did a careless man´s stray cat ignite the devastating Inca civil war in the 1500s? Certain ramifications necessarily follow: (1) Without the Inca civil war the Cañari Natives who created the Patecte in what is now Ecuador would not have been decimated. They supported Huascar, who was ultimately defeated by his brother, Atahualpa. As we shall see, a massacre resulted. By the time the Spaniards arrived in Cañar in the 1530s, only some 3,000 Cañaris remained in their homeland. (2) Without the Inca civil war, there would have been no Spanish conquest of South America. The Cañari leaders saw the newly arrived Spaniards as their opportunity to get even with Atahualpa. Every historian I have met agrees with the following statement: without the aid of the Cañaris, the Spaniards would not have conquered South America. (3) Without the Spanish conquest, South America today would be an incredibly different place. For starters, what language/s would they speak? Quecha? Certainly not Spanish. South America would not be the only area that would be, in countless ways, unrecognizable. We will return to this subject. * * * How could somebody´s stray cat have been the cause of it all? Our prior posts on the meaning of the cat in the Patecte concluded that the feline is a highly ambiguous symbol. Totem and taboo, revered and despised throughout history; feminine, independent, self-sufficient, the cat is an exceptionally powerful archetype. The psychoanalyst Barbara Hannah underlined the feline´s ambiguity: “[T]he cat is especially important on account of her tendency to go off…into the depths of the unconscious and to degenerate into all kinds of injurious or even fatal behavior…All that each one of us can do is to work honestly on the archetypal image of the cat in our own souls… [Our cat instinct] can bring us destruction if it is used in plots and black magic, or healing if the magic is tamed and used for a genuine, non-egotistical purpose. It can relax us and help heal our overstrained conscious attitude … [or} make us lazy and false. It can lead us away from our human relationships into a desert of purely autoerotic isolation…[or] it can give us access to the universal knowledge and make us truly self-reliant… [If we can keep our roots and self-reliance] as Puss-in-Boots did, without losing relationship to others and even helping them, we really reach the summit of relating to the luminosity of the cat.” “Fatal behavior” in and in spite of ourselves. Plotting, scheming -- self-sabotage. Plotting is indeed the telltale heart of the matter. Barbara Hannah concluded of the human cat instinct, “She usually hooks on to ambition, power and money where temptations are great and men are not so terribly conscious…In fact, catching plots is the conditio sine qua non of men becoming conscious of their animas.” Our story is about a terribly unconscious man who let his cat get away from him. The consequences on world history are as colossal as the man is, today, unknown. * * * When Inca ruler Huayna Capac died in 1524, his empire was divided between his two sons, Atahualpa in what today is Quito, Ecuador in the north and Huáscar in Cuzco, Peru, in the south. The fabulous city of Tomebamba, the center of the Cañaris and second only to Cuzco in the Inca Empire (see our post “The Gold Mother: Tomebamba”), was in Atahualpa´s territory. The Ecuadorian historian Gustavo Reinoso Hermida is the foremost authority on the Cañaris. Here is his account of what happened. We will show shortly how it made your world what it is today "After the death of Huayna Cápac, the first years of government of his two heirs passed in peace... Showing greatness, Atahualpa sent a delegation of Incas and Cañaris who carried messages of tolerance and valuable gifts. Huáscar, in response, ordered all of them executed, a reproachable attitude that caused deep anger in Atahualpa. In 1529, Chief Chamba, Cañari Governor of the province of Cañar and subordinate to the kingdom of Atahualpa, died. He was succeeded by his son Urco Colla, or Ullco Colla, who ... ignored the authority of the Quito King Atahualpa. Urco Colla, full of envy for the power achieved by Atahualpa and his construction of magnificent buildings in Tomebamba, requested confirmation of his command from Huascar, at the same time requesting military help in order to consolidate the annexation of his territory to Cuzco. Let's read Miguel Cabello Balboa: ´… Ullco Colla, Cacique and Señor de los Cañaris, was naturally envious and scathing; he sent secret messengers to Cuzco letting Guáscar know how his brother - Atahualpa - was treated by his subjects as sole emperor and with Royal arrogance made people work for his monarchy on palaces and fortresses ... in Tomebamba.´ Atahualpa, who considered the province of Tomebamba as his own, knew about Ullco Colla's schemes and intrigues: to this was added Huascar's claims to become by lineage and the force of war, the only sovereign of the once Tahuantinsuyo [ Inca empire]. In the middle of 1530, while Atahualpa was preparing to defend his sovereign rights to the province of Tomebamba which he inherited, Huascar reinforced his troops and sent 40,000 soldiers to Tomebamba, under General Atoco… Cañaris and Incas continued their invasion to end the life of King Atahualpa and incorporate all his territory to Cuzco; but the rapid reorganization and strengthening of the Atahualpa´s troops ... led to the defeat and capture of Urco Colla and Atoco. Immediately, on the same battlefield, they were executed with arrows. The ferocious battle cost more than 16,000 lives on both sides. Atahualpa ... without giving truce to the reorganization of the Huascarista forces ... unleashed a storm of fury and unrelenting cruelty against the hated Canaris and Cuzco Incas of royalty, which ended in a horrifying orgy of blood and devastation. ” What would have happened if Urco Colla simply had stayed with Atahualpa? Would the Inca civil war have occurred anyway, without the scheming of Urco Colla? It would make an amazing conference for historians and other scholars to discuss and debate the woulda-coulda-shouda´s of the case. In the meantime, all I can say is, although we do not know what might have happened, we definitely do know what did happen. * * * I think we strung the beads regarding Urco Colla´s wayward cat and the Inca civil war. We come to the vital, natural, normal question: what does all that have to do with you and me? Answer: everything. As noted, without the Inca civil war there would have been no Spanish conquest of South America. Without that conquest, the Western world would arguably be four-times poorer than it is today. John Maynard Keynes: “From the earliest times of which we have record-back, say, to two thousand years before Christ-down to the beginning of the eighteenth century, there was no very great change in the standard of life of the average man living in the civilised centres of the earth… The modern age opened; I think, with the accumulation of capital which began in the sixteenth century. I believe…that this was initially due to the rise of prices, and the profits to which that led, which resulted from the treasure of gold and silver which Spain brought from the New World into the Old… From the sixteenth century, with a cumulative crescendo after the eighteenth, the great age of science and technical inventions began, which since the beginning of the nineteenth century has been in full flood--coal, steam, electricity, petrol, steel, rubber, cotton, the chemical industries, automatic machinery and the methods of mass production, wireless, printing, Newton, Darwin, and Einstein, and thousands of other things and men too famous and familiar to catalogue. What is the result? In spite of an enormous growth in the population of the world… the average standard of life in Europe and the United States has been raised, I think, about fourfold.” John Maynard Keynes, “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren” (1930) Pause and look, Western reader, around your room. Without the Spanish conquest and the gold and silver it pillaged and plundered and sent to Europe, most of what you are seeing right now wouldn´t be there – starting with the computer on which you are reading these words. “Four-fold.” There it is: El Dorado in its fullest, truest sense – not a mystical city paved with gold hidden in a jungle but the daily world where we live and work. The fact we take the four-fold increase entirely for granted makes no difference whatsoever. As El Dorado´s icon, its face, the Patecte is more than a piece of metal. ¿Quecha? Ciertamente no español. Leamos a Miguel Cabello Balboa: ´… (Gustavo Reinoso Hermida, “Cañaris e Incas: Historia y Cultura”. Tomo I. Cuenca, Ecuador, 2006, pp.281-5.) . What did they really Look like, the two brothers who in the 1500s fought a devastating civil war for control of the Inca Empire? Our prior post discussed how it was the war that changed the world. If you are a Western reader, had the Inca civil war never occurred, what you are seeing all around you right now would be a lot different – for starters, at least four times poorer. Our prior post also published portraits of the two Inca rulers who literally fought to death. Inquiring minds want to know: When and where did the two men sit down and have their portraits painted? Answer: it never happened. Are the portraits accurate? Inaccurate? Answer: who knows? Here is the story behind the two most renowned fratricide portraits. It has the basic dramaturgy found throughout the lost gold Patecte´s history. To wit: The road is paved with double and triple-bottomed boxes. * * * Part of a collection of 14 oil portraits of Inca kings, the two paintings are presently housed in the Brooklyn Museum. If you want to go see them, good luck. My understanding is they are not currently on display. That fact says simultaneously too much and not enough. The good news is that if our documentary on the Patecte is made, the bad news could change overnight. The artist is unknown. The paintings have been dated to the mid-1700s. That means, well, here is the math: The Spaniards killed Atahualpa in 1533. Huascar was defeated and ordered killed by Atahualpa in 1532. Conclusion: the portraits were painted 200 years after the two men were dead. Nobody in living memory at the time possibly could have provided first-hand knowledge to the artist of the faces of Atahualpa and Huascar. What, then, were the fratricide portraits based on? Conventional wisdom identifies the source as a book cover. Earlier illustrations of Inca rulers appeared on the Spanish historian and chronicler Antonio de Herrera y Tordesilla’s "Historia general de los hechos de los castellanos en las islas y tierra firme del mar océano (General History of the Deeds of the Castillians on the Islands and Mainland of the Ocean Sea Known as the West Indies").. The book was first published in 1615. You will find attached the Herrera portrait of Huascar and also the 1700s version in the Brooklyn Museum. There is no doubt whatsoever about the influence of Herrera. As for his brother, a problem emerges. Look closely at the book cover: Herrera did not provide an illustration of Atahualpa. The omission will be explained shortly. Herrera was born in 1549 – 15 years too late to have seen in person Atahualpa and/or Huascar. However, in Herrera´s youth there were people still alive who could have seen the two brothers and provided him with first-hand descriptions. Is that what happened? Answer: who knows? In the search for the source of the Herrera illustrations – the origin of origins -- Carla Colon offered two other possibilities: “The first are paintings of Pre-Hispanic Inka rulers commissioned in 1572 by the Viceroy Francisco de Toledo and sent to King Phillip II of Spain. The second is a painting [sent to Spain in 1603] commissioned by Inkas of royal descent in Cuzco which depicted Pre-Hispanic Inka rulers and their descendants.” (https://smarthistory.org/fourteen-portraits-of-the-inka-ki…/) Pre-Hispanic Incas did not have the custom of painting portraits. However, after the Spanish conquest, royal Incas had portraits painted European-style to impress their new rulers. The possibility that a royal Inca household in Cuzco is the origin of the Brooklyn paintings is reinforced by the inscription on the Atahualpa portrait: “bastard tyrant.” Atahualpa and Huascar had the same father, Huayna Capac, but not the same mother. Inca royalty supported Huascar in the civil war because he was of 100% royal lineage. They despised Atahualpa because his mother was a concubine. * * * Just when you think you know something – BANG! – the bottom falls out and another layer appears. As mentioned, the same dramaturgy appears throughout the story of another painting. The most renowned image of the Patecte is not based on the Patecte. It is a lithograph – a painting. In this case the lithograph-painting is of a painting of the Patecte commissioned by Heduvides Serrano, who discovered the Patecte in 1869. See our post “The Patecte You See Is Not What is There.” After a six-year search, we found the Heduvides painting. It had not been seen since the 1920s, when Father Julio-Maria Matovelle commissioned the lithograph. Our documentary will show it for the first time, restored and in full color, to the general public. The Heduvides painting was not the only artwork that disappeared. The lithograph also vanished. We are searching for it. A final (?) layer appears. Is the Heduvides painting an accurate representation of the Patecte? There is only one way to answer that question. I don´t remember what I drew for that assignment in art class. Whatever it was, it didn´t come close in creativity or technical proficiency to the astounding picture the ancient Aztecs made of their god Tezcatlipoca. God/gods are archetypes, i.e., universal, archaic patterns and images in the collective unconscious of humanity. They are inherited potentials – the psychic equivalent of instincts. God, the wise old man, the trickster figure, etc.: all cultures have the same archetypes; however, each culture develops them differently. Tezcatlipoca is a textbook example. In Christianity, it is clear what the devil wants: souls. In Aztec mythology Tezcatlipoca was a hybrid god of the devil and fortune. His motive was completely, absolutely, unknown; he might save a dying child then cause a drought that would kill thousands of people. His total arbitrariness enhanced his power; he was said to be able to “steal the sun away.” The attached image of Tezcatlipoca is the most well-known. Monkey, buzzard, arrows: numerous anthropologists have identified and discussed each element. I will make only two observations: First, a masterful dramatic device is employed. Look closely: which leg is forward, the right or the left? Scholars have discussed that question at length; no definitive answer has been found. Let´s start with what is universally agreed to. Tezcatlipoca´s stance is ambiguous. That ambiguity gives energy, tension, to the artwork. It never remains static. You don´t look at it; you watch it. Second, a mirror covers Tezcatlipoca´s forward foot. Again, there is a great deal of speculation about what that element means. I can only answer in terms of Western European culture in which the unconscious as manifested in dreams often confounds “sole” as in a shoe with “soul.” It is crucial to note that in other languages, e.g. Spanish, those phenomena have two very different words so that particular association probably does not occur. My initial, highly rudimentary interpretation of a mirror covering a foot: you can try all you want to look into the soul of Tezcatlipoca, to figure him out. All you will get back is what he sends you: an image of yourself. |
